Over two hundred years of drastic isolationism in Japan ended with the Meiji period (1868–1912), ushering in an era of rapid and remarkable changes as the island opened to outside cultural, economic, and political influences. Japanese woodblock prints—hundreds of thousands of them—produced during this period served as a significant record of historic events and dramatic advances in transportation, architecture, fashion, and social decorum.Warrior-turned-artist Hashimoto Chikanobu (Japanese, 1838–1912) was one of the most prolific woodblock artists of the day, known for depicting a wide range of subjects—from war and rebellion to scenes of domesticity. He represented the elegant surroundings of courtesans, royal subjects, and other beautiful people in brilliant hues of reds, blues, and purples.
